The Eiffel Tower

France’s Eiffel Tower is one of the country’s top tourist spots and just taking a picture beside this astonishing Tower is the signature clue that you are in Paris, without even having to tell anyone!

Believe it or not, at 1050 feet, this structure was the world’s tallest building for over 40 years before it was overtaken by the Chrysler building in New York in 1930. Also, it was initially built as an entrance to the World Fair Exposition in 1889 to mark the 100th anniversary of the French revolution.

It took roughly two years and two months to complete this stunning structure, which was from 1887 to 1889. Three hundred steelworkers and well over 17000 metallic parts, 40 tons of paint, and 2.5 million rivets are what it took to birth the glamorous Eiffel Tower.

An amazing fact about this great structure is that it moves while also being able to withstand the heaviest winds, and never sway more than 4.5 inches! In 1913, a renowned expert on aerodynamics named Eiffel published “The Resistance of the Air.” He and his team actually designed the Tower never to sway more than 4.5 inches and have heavy wind resistance.

Eiffel Tower is named right after the talented genius who brainstormed and designed this structure, Gustave Eiffel. France remains top of the list of most visited countries in the world.

Paris, the capital city of France is definitely on so many travellers’ must-visit list for a reason, the popular French cuisines, wine, croissants, cheese, baguette bread, historic monuments, friendly locals and so much more.

France is a globally loved nation, also famous for high-end fashion shows, skincare products, and designer perfumes.

Turbulence

Yemi Bankole is a long-time friend of mine. His friendly and calm nature makes him a perfect fit for his job as a flight attendant with a reputable local airline, which he has been doing for the last five years.

Just yesterday, he called to tell me he had the most terrifying flying experience ever.

 It was extreme turbulence.

Turbulence can be very frightening and uncomfortable. The mere experience of being 37,000 feet above the ground and being violently tossed from side to side in an aeroplane cabin is nerve-wracking for anyone. The interesting thing is that turbulence is no cause for alarm and even severe turbulence is hardly dangerous.

Turbulence is just like a bumpy ride in the sky. It may be regarded as an unsteady or violent movement of air that causes the aircraft to bounce or shake.

Why turbulence?

Turbulence occurs for a number of reasons, which include a change in the airflow, jet streams, hot rising air usually from thunderstorm clouds, landscapes (objects near the plane like mountains or skyscrapers). It is not because the aeroplane is faulty.

What to expect during extreme turbulence?

Actually, for a moment, the aeroplane may be out of control. You may feel severe shaking of aircraft, a noticeable strain against your seatbelt, and even objects and luggage not properly secured away may even fall or be tossed around.

Mild turbulence may even go unnoticed by passengers. Extreme turbulence happens once in a very rare while. Just like Yemi who has been flying every day of his life for the past five years just experienced extreme turbulence for the first time.

What is the first thing to do if turbulence occurs?

Keep calm and buckle your seatbelt immediately. If you happen to be in the toilet or standing, rush to your seat and buckle your seatbelt. Do not panic and try to reassure other passengers seated next to you. The most likely way anyone would sustain an injury during turbulence is if your seatbelt is unbuckled, the force of the turbulence may hit you against an object and injure you.

Most times, pilots already know when they are going to hit turbulence from weather and radar reports. Turbulence is completely normal and many of us have experienced mild turbulence while in flight without even knowing.

Can Turbulence cause a plane to crash?

“it is rare and the industry has worked over the years to reduce the risk,” says American Senior Aviation Consultant Adrian Young.

Ebonylife kick-starts it’s Creative Academy

Great news to aspiring and even professional filmmakers, screenwriters, actors/actresses, cinematographers, visual producers and even our society as a whole as Ebonylife launches a creative academy in partnership with Lagos State Government through Lagos State Creative Initiative (LACI) under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture

Ebonylife creative Academy officially opened on the 8th of March, 2021. It stands out from other institutions in the country as it’s top-notch standards are specifically aimed at letting talented, creative, and passionate enrollees explore a world of opportunities in the film and media industry.

CEO of EbonyLife, Mo Abudu, stated “We have so much talent in Nigeria and our people are ready to work. Unfortunately, very little training is available locally and most people cannot afford to go abroad for training. EbonyLife Creative Academy is meant to fill that gap and make world-class training available. Thankfully, the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, understood our vision and gave us the support we needed to establish the academy here in Lagos, the hub of Nigerian filmmaking.”

ELCA( Ebonylife creative academy) offers short, free and practical courses put together by local and international industry experts in courses ranging from film making, directing, producing, visual/audios, media content production, screenwriting, acting and so much more!

What’s more amazing is that all classes will be held at the new and fully equipped campus in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. The lecture rooms are designed to accommodate 15 students per class which will enhance better assimilation of courses taught and practiced. This implies that about 120 students are expected to graduate each semester and also means that there are limited slots to register for each semester.

Registration for these programmes commenced on 17th December and the first batch of enrollees are set to begin training away!

Registration is still currently on and the next batch of enrollees are expected to be selected from 26th April 2021.

After each session, students from different course specialties are grouped to create an actual television show or short film for exhibition, which paves way for talent showcase, internships, and even golden career opportunities!

Does this match your career path or passion? Then go for it!

The $100,000,000 Travel and Leisure deal

What is in a name ?

Despite contrary opinions and actions in today’s world, a good name is sure better and can eventually translate to riches, opens doors and makes room to be admired, respected and the list is endless.

The Travel +Leisure magazine is a 50+ year old media brand which has been recently acquired by Orlando,Fla based timeshare company Wyndham Destinations.  The company was originally launched in 1937 as U.S. Camera & Travel, the magazine became Travel + Leisure after American Express purchased it for its publication division in 1968. It was later acquired by Time Inc. and was part of that company’s purchase by Meredith.

The sale comes at an uncertain time for the tourism industry which has a ripple effect on the entire industry . The industry is currently facing disappointments, cancellations and resort closures during the COVID-19 pandemic, even the buyer Wyndham Destinations reported a loss of $258 million through the first nine months of 2020 and laid off or furloughed 9,000 workers at one point.

Then things changed for good as at the end of September, company executives told shareholders, Wyndham Destinations had rehired about 3,300 of those workers.

Meredith Corp. announced Wednesday that it is selling the flagship travel magazine to the timeshare giant Wyndham Destinations for $100,000,000million but the buyer isn’t concerned with the magazine so much as the title on its cover, the brand and legacy name.

All the hard work Travel + Leisure editors have been doing for 50 years led us to this point because Wyndham Destinations wants to create this whole new company centered around our brand and legacy and name, so I’m thrilled about that, said Jacqueline Gifford, editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure.

As a result of the sale, Wyndham Destinations will rename itself Travel + Leisure Co. next month. The company (buyer) will lease the actual magazine back to Meredith (seller) as part of a 30-year-agreement, allowing the publisher to continue to produce and sell the publication. It could not be juicer nor more interesting. Just like Moses Mother, you are allowed to nurse the baby you let go and still benefit from the deal.

In addition to the $100 million cash purchase, Wyndham Destinations agreed to buy $30 million worth of ads in Meredith publications over the next five years, Meredith CEO Tom Harty said Wednesday during the Citi 2021 Global TMT West Virtual Conference. Now that is one heck of a deal !

“We believe there’s tremendous value in our brands that we don’t get value for,” he said. “And you have these opportunities. You can either sell or you can partner.”

The Why

Who is Wyndham Destinations ?

Wyndam is a rentals and Time share giant with 4 million members in its timeshare network and manages 230 resorts. They make money by selling timeshare contracts, managing resorts and helping members book vacations at a network of hotels and homes owned by other companies.

The company made this move in a bid to appeal to a generation of younger and aspirational clients/travelers.Their client base is older and time share is soon fading (story for another day) as people are more spontaneous in recent times. Their purchase interest was locked on Travel +Leisure members and followers and the circulation of the magazine was not a major concern.

Travel +Leisure has 2 membership travel clubs in existence with tens of thousands of members.
